The Wundowie Water Tank Community Mural Project, aptly named "Tanked," was completed in February 2021, marking a significant moment of artistic achievement and community collaboration.
This vibrant artwork is the result of a collective effort involving a diverse group of contributors, including local artists, the students of Wundowie Primary School, as well as their dedicated parents and teachers. The project became a source of immense pride for the entire town, as it not only brought the community together but also highlighted their shared identity and connection to their heritage.
Wundowie, a small town located in Western Australia, lies between the larger cities of Perth and Northam, nestled in the scenic Darling Range. The town has a rich industrial history, having once been home to an ironworks that produced the renowned Wundowie Pot Bellied Stove. This historical significance, along with its role as a siding stop on the Eastern Railway, forms an important part of Wundowie’s legacy.
The town’s name itself, established in 1907, is tied to the nearby Woondowing Spring. The origin of the name is believed to come from the Aboriginal word “Ngwundow,” which means "to lie down," reflecting the peaceful and natural landscape surrounding the area.
The mural painted on the Wundowie Water Tank serves as a powerful reflection of the town’s history, culture, and spirit. It captures the essence of the community through a creative and vibrant depiction, ensuring that Wundowie’s heritage is celebrated and remembered for years to come.
By incorporating the efforts of local residents, particularly the schoolchildren, the mural serves as a testament to the pride and unity of the community.
It’s not just a piece of public art but a lasting symbol of collaboration, creativity, and a shared love for the town’s rich history. The project has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on Wundowie, making the water tank a true landmark in the town’s landscape.
