In the past, the rounding up of cattle on outback Australian farms was exclusively conducted with a horse and cattle dog. Nowadays,
trail bikes and helicopters have become integral to the process. This water tank in Windorah depicts such an event. It portrays the risky task of getting up close with stray cows, a fundamental aspect of a cowboy’s job, whether on horseback, a quad bike, or in a helicopter.
The use of small, manoeuvrable helicopters, capable of flying as low as 300 feet, has become commonplace for muster work on many vast stations across Australia. Unfortunately, each year, an average of ten helicopter musterers lose their lives in helicopter crashes.
