The water tank is situated on Flagstaff Mountain at the Oxley Lookout in Tamworth, just 2 km from the CBD, at the top of White Street. The Oxley Scenic Lookout offers breathtaking views of Tamworth and the Peel River Valley.
In August 2018, artists Damon Moroney and James Moulton of Iknograffix were commissioned to paint the water tank to address a persistent graffiti problem. By 2019, they completed a stunning mural depicting the beautiful surrounding scenery.
Accessing the tank involves a challenging trek up a steep, uneven, and rocky path approximately 200 meters long. This route is best suited for those who are physically fit. In hot weather, carrying water is advisable.
The tank is fully fenced, so photographs must be taken through the gaps in the wire. Despite the difficulty in accessing it, this water tank remains one of the most scenic spots, offering a unique view of the area.
