Titled 'We Made Our Own Fun', the Middlemount Water Tank, located on Nolan Drive in Queensland, is just a short distance from Blue Mountain Park. This vibrant mural was completed in December 2021, adding a unique artistic touch to the small town.

The piece was designed to celebrate the simplicity of life, reflecting on the experiences of growing up in a small town where the community often had to create their own entertainment. The artwork encapsulates the essence of small-town living, reminding viewers of the joys that can be found in life’s simpler moments.

Additionally, the mural serves as a commemorative tribute to the Grasstree Mine, which was a significant part of the town's history. The mural honors the mine and the impact of its eventual shutdown, which marked the end of an era for Middlemount. It’s a heartfelt nod to the community's deep connection with the mine and the workers who were part of it.

Middlemount, a town with a history of just over 30 years, was specifically built to support the coal mining industry. The Grasstree Mine, located about 25 kilometers southwest of the town, was an underground coal mine that played a vital role in the area’s economy. However, on May 6th, 2014, tragedy struck when a worker was fatally injured while calibrating gas detectors underground.

During the process, a hatch was opened, releasing an irrespirable atmosphere that caused immediate asphyxiation. The loss of this worker was a deeply sorrowful event for the community, and the mural stands as a memorial to those affected by the tragedy and to the lasting legacy of the Grasstree Mine.

For those wishing to visit the Middlemount Water Tank and take in the mural, the site offers easy access with street parking located directly across from the tank. However, it’s important to note that the parking area is only suitable for cars. I would strongly recommend leaving larger vehicles behind, as the space may be limited for bigger cars. The artwork provides a chance to pause and reflect on the local history, offering a glimpse into the heart of this small, mining town.
