The first Karratha Water Tank was painted by artist Chris Nixon in June 2021, adding a vibrant piece of public art to the city. These iconic tanks are located on Water Tank Hill, a prominent spot with sweeping views of the surrounding area.

Situated above Karratha’s bustling CBD, the Water Tanks are highly visible from various vantage points across the region. Whether driving along Dampier Highway, walking through the city center, or flying into Karratha’s airport, the Water Tanks stand out as a significant landmark. Over the years, they have become a well-loved symbol of the City, further elevated by recent additions to the site. A new lookout was constructed next to the tanks, offering an incredible panoramic view of not just the City itself but also the Burrup Peninsula and the beautiful Nickol Bay. The lookout has quickly become a popular spot for both locals and visitors to take in the stunning scenery.

In addition to their visual appeal, the Water Tanks and the lookout serve as a key point of entry to the Yaburara Heritage Trail. This well-known walking track winds through the picturesque Karratha hills and is steeped in cultural significance. The trail features several Aboriginal heritage sites, making it an important route for those interested in learning more about the region’s indigenous history and heritage.

While the area is fully fenced for safety and preservation, it can sometimes make it tricky to capture the perfect photograph of the tanks. Nonetheless, the Water Tanks remain an essential and beloved part of Karratha’s identity.
