The Hillston Water Tower Art is titled ‘Sunset Over the Lachlan’ as it portrays the inspiring waterway and the wildlife it holds during this
time of day.
Australia’s fourth longest river, the Lachlan terminates in the wetlands of the Great Cumbung Swamp except under periods of high flow when it connects with the Murrumbidgee river between Hay and Balranald. Home to several nationally important wetlands, it provides habitat to a variety of native freshwater fish, several of which are listed as endangered including the little known Southern Pygmy Perch, Olive Perchlet and Purple-spotted Gudgeon. The river is also home to the Critically Endangered Hanley River Snail, recently re discovered and previously thought to be extinct within the system.
