The painting of the Gunnedah silo commenced at the end of November 2020 and was skilfully completed just in time for Christmas of the same year. This remarkable mural portrays the captivating story of Dorothea Mackellar (1855-1963), the gifted poet who penned
one of Australia’s most renowned poems.
“I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.”
These poetic lines, extracted from the second verse of ‘My Country’, were composed by a young and homesick Dorothea in the UK around 1904. They beautifully capture the essence of Australia’s unique landscape.
For an optimal viewing experience, visitors can access a perfect vantage point from the walkway on Gunnedah’s newly constructed bridge, seamlessly connecting the Oxley Highway and Warrabungle Street. From this elevated position, one can fully appreciate the artistry adorning the silo and immerse themselves in the captivating beauty of Dorothea Mackellar’s poetic legacy.
