For many years now, Mongolian-born artist Heesco, has been revitalising the Riverina with his vibrant large-scale murals on silos and water tanks.

The Griffith artwork, completed on October 18 2024 now covers the nine-megalitre drinking water reservoir on Griffith’s Scenic Hill. Commissioned by the Griffith City Council, the mural weaves together themes of water, multiculturalism, agriculture, manufacturing, and Indigenous heritage.

In an interview with Region Riverina, Heesco discussed the inspiration for this creation and reflected on his artistic journey. He shared how he conquered his fear of heights and the highs and lows of using a boom lift to spray-paint his designs.

The mural depicts a top-down view of a kitchen bench, representing how food bridges different cultures. Heesco drew inspiration from the Riverina’s abundance of fresh produce, which serves as the mural’s central theme.

“We worked closely with the local Indigenous community to ensure the design was meaningful to them,” Heesco said. “That’s why we included elements like the goanna, trail marks, and representations of the area’s three major rivers—the Wambool (Macquarie), Calare (Lachlan), and Murrumbidgee. The circles signify gathering points.”

Through this collaboration, Heesco’s latest mural continues his mission of enriching the region’s landscapes with artwork that carries deep cultural and community significance.
