Starting in late September 2020 and concluding seven weeks later in November, the GrainCorp Silos at Goroke was painted by New Zealand born artist Geoffrey Carran. Geoffrey’s passion for painting birds, combined with his expertise in creating large-scale murals, made him the perfect choice for this project. Before the Goroke silos, Geoffrey had already showcased his talent in bird murals at various locations, including Edenhope, Balmoral, Niddrie, and Naracoorte.
The name ‘Goroke’ is derived from the local Aboriginal word for Magpie, making this native bird a fitting centrepiece for the design. Geoffrey expanded on this concept by incorporating other indigenous avian species, such as the Kookaburra and Galah. These three birds are depicted against the backdrop of a rural landscape, representative of the picturesque West Wimmera region. Throughout the project, Geoffrey collaborated closely with the local community, West Wimmera Shire Council, and GrainCorp, ensuring that the artwork resonated with the area’s unique identity and heritage.
