In March 2024, a magnificent mural featuring Hereford cattle was unveiled to an excited crowd of thousands of livestock buyers and visitors during the prestigious Mountain Calf Sales event. This special unveiling highlighted the strong ties between the local farming community and the iconic cattle breed, drawing attention to the region’s agricultural heritage.
The mural was the creative vision of Barry Newcomen, a dedicated Hereford breeder from Newcomen Herefords in Ensay. Barry’s passion for the breed and his commitment to the farming lifestyle are reflected in the intricate details of the painting, which captures the essence of life on the land. The artwork depicts a group of Hereford cattle, accompanied by stockmen working the land, including the well-known Ensay breeder Phil “Bluey” Commins, who is portrayed on horseback.
On the opposite side of the mural, Barry and his wife, Topsy, are featured as central figures, adding a personal touch to the scene. This element of the artwork not only honors their contribution to the local farming community but also symbolizes the deep-rooted family tradition that shapes the area’s agricultural identity.
The mural is a testament to the history and ongoing significance of Hereford cattle farming in the region, beautifully immortalizing both the animals and the people who have worked with them for generations. The artwork was captured in stunning detail by Mountain Shack Travels, whose photography preserves the moment for future generations to appreciate.
