Work on the Edithburgh Water Tower began in mid-March 2021 and was completed just a few weeks later, in a stunning display of artistic collaboration. The mural was created by local artist Mike Makatron, alongside Conrad Bizjak and Dylan Butler, bringing the water tower to life with vibrant imagery that celebrates the local marine environment and wildlife.

The concept for the Edithburgh Water Tower artwork draws inspiration from a diverse array of coral, all captured through underwater photography taken at the nearby Edithburgh jetty. Among the marine life featured are the fascinating Striped Pyjama Squid, the graceful Cuttlefish, and the magnificent Leafy Sea Dragon, all showcased in intricate detail. The artwork’s lower section contrasts the deep blue of the surf with dynamic representations of the sea creatures, creating a vivid and immersive underwater scene.

Rising above the oceanic imagery, the upper part of the mural features a radiant sunrise, setting a beautiful backdrop for two iconic birds in flight—the White Bellied Sea Eagle, soaring with strength and elegance, and the endangered Far Eastern Curlew, captured mid-flight in dynamic stages. The Troubridge Island lighthouse, a key landmark in the region, stands tall above the waves, adding a distinct local touch. At the base of the mural, there is a subtle reference to the establishment of the town in 1856, grounding the artwork in its historical context.

This mural is not just a visual representation; it is a celebration of Edithburgh’s unique natural environment, its rich history, and the artistry of the talented local and regional artists who brought it all to life.
