Cloncurry Water Tank Art - Queensland
Artist: The Zookeeper
Location: Entrance via Chinaman Creek Road QLD
Video by: @Adrian-xv1sr
Perched on a hill with a commanding view of Cloncurry and the Cloncurry River, the water tank stands as a proud landmark. This remote Australian tank is located along Chinaman Creek Dam Road and is visible from the Barkly Highway as you approach the town from the west.
The striking artwork was completed by artist Zookeeper in October 2018. The mural spans 360 degrees, with one side depicting an Indigenous boy named Barrack. As shared on Joel Fergie’s Instagram, Barrack is a proud member of the Mitakoodi Community and a true local legend from Cloncurry.
Joel was inspired to paint Barrack during Naidoc week after seeing him perform with a group called the "Deadly Dancers" at his school.
On the opposite side of the tank, the mural features Brianna, also a "Deadly Dancer." She is depicted tossing a paper plane across the landscape, symbolizing Cloncurry as the birthplace of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Did you know Cloncurry is the birthplace of the Royal Flying Doctor Service? Founded by Reverend John Flynn in 1928, the service began as an experimental aerial medical program called the Australian Inland Mission Aerial Medical Service. This experiment, based in Cloncurry, later evolved into the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Access to the water tank requires navigating a steep hill, but the small car park at the top can accommodate vehicles, including caravans, buses, and motorhomes, provided it’s not too crowded.
A picnic table is available at the site where visitors can relax and take in the stunning view of Cloncurry.
