The Bourke Water Tower Art was painted by John Murray in April 2021, with assistance from Bob Barrett and Lucas Kasper. Theartwork serves as a tribute toathlete Percy Hobson.
In 1962, Gundabooka man Percy Hobson made history by becoming the first Indigenous athlete to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games. At just 20 years old, and against all odds, this local high jumper broke the record when he leapt over a 6’11” high bar at Perth’s Perry Lakes Stadium. This remarkable achievement forever established Percy as one of
Australia’s most iconic athletes. To honour his legacy, his hometown of Bourke, NSW, has celebrated Percy Hobson’s
accomplishment by dedicating the Bourke Water Tower as a canvas or a large mural of Percy—a recreation of the iconic photo capturing Hobson soaring through the air, the moment he secured his first gold medal.
